Israel readying major aid shipment for Japan

Israel accepted an official request for assistance from the Japanese Foreign Ministry on Saturday, and sent two doctors and an officer from the Home Front Command to investigate what a much larger contingent will need to bring survivors of the disaster-stricken country.

In the meanwhile, both the foreign and defense ministries are assembling a massive amount of blankets, coats, gloves and portable toilets to be flown to Kurihara, where survivors from nearby Sendai city are being housed, according to the Ynet news site.

The planned aid comes after the government rushed 100 Geiger counters on Thursday to monitor radiation levels in areas near nuclear reactors in affected areas of Japan.

Rotem Industries, a local firm that provides monitoring gear for Israel's own Dimona research reactor, as well as for numerous nuclear power plants in the United States, provided the counters, and is now preparing a shipment of 20 different types of monitoring devices for Japan's civilian populace feared have been exposed to high levels of radiation.
