Israeli women’s basketball club Elitzur Ramla beat France’s Arras 61-53 last night to capture the EuroCup. Their amazing run makes them Israel’s first women’s club to capture the European Championship. Many of you probably don’t remember the 1977 men’s finals, when Tal Brody led Maccabi Tel Aviv to Israel’s first championship.

Maybe there can be only one, but with Ramla’s historic win, many are asking “Who is this generation’s Tal Brody? ” Her name is Shay Doron, captain of Ramla and the first Israeli to play in the WNBA (She played for the New York Liberty). She scored 14 points and had 7 boards in the win against the French club. Before she came back to Israel, she helped lead the University of Maryland to its first ever national title when they upset Duke in 2006.

But that year’s March Madness probably can’t compare to winning a championship for your country. President Shimon Peres congratulated the group of women for their amazing victory, saying “You’ve put Israel and Ramla on the women’s basketball map in Europe.”
